Customize the camera settings

Camera settings in Rocket League are extremely important and very personal. The more aware you are of your position relative to the ball, walls, floor, opponents, or even the ceiling, dictates how capable you can become as a player. Play around with the settings on offer to find something that works for you.

If you have trouble hitting the exact point on the ball that you are looking for, reduce your camera distance so the ball is larger on your screen by the time you hit it. If your car moves around too much on the screen, reduce your stiffness. Want to see more when you flick your right stick? Increase your swivel speed. There are always plenty of wikis, fan sites, and other places to find your favourite player’s settings, and experiment with what works best for you.

Learn to rotate

When you play this game the first time, it is important to position your -self with the right angles. At first you may think that that all of the players are charging towards the ball directly, but as time goes by and you are getting familiar to the game than you will realize that they are not stupid enough to directly charge towards the ball all the time, but rather they are going in a pattern, ably called “rotating”. The goal should never be left unattended, especially when you are in a team. As a team, it it is must to have a proper rotation to enjoy the game with different views.

Don't underestimate the handbrake

The handbrake is a tool I use as much as boost and jumping. It allows you to drift and whip your car around quickly to get into position, and it's helped me score a lot of unexpected goals. Get very familiar with it and use it to your advantage.

Don't chase the ball

When you are playing, don’t directly go towards the ball with a plan. You should wait in a corner and observe other players and when you find the opportunity, you should kick. In this way you will not lose your energy and you can also charge your boost for later use.

Pass over shoot

Building on the ball chasing point, you'll sometimes find yourself in a situation where you have a pretty clear shot at goal. The urge to "break their axles" with a sick goal will be strong. If the other team is back and defending, resist the urge to take a shot. They'll be ready and waiting for almost anything you can throw at them.

Instead, take the ball wide, to one wall or the other, and get creative there with a pass to one of your teammates. The chances of a weird bounce, passing the ball to where a defender can't get to it or doing something unexpected are much higher than bumbling an accidental goal in over a few defenders.

Find a teammate

Whether you queue for ranked or casual matches, one of the best things you can do is find someone to play with. Not only will this lower the odds of one of you rage quitting when things get tough, you will learn to anticipate each other's moves much better than some random teammate.

Conserve precious boost

Boost capsules are an important part of Rocket League's core gameplay. Boosting lets you blast across the field to intercept or block shots and rival cars, and lets you fly through the air during jumps for spectacular trick shots. However, boost is consumed very quickly, so you need to regularly drive over boost orbs on the field to replenish your stock.

Boost orbs are available to all drivers, and take precious seconds to respawn once collected. Waiting a few moments for a boost orb might not sound like a big deal, but Rocket League matches are fast and furious. Waiting for a boost orb takes you out of the action and cripples your team's offense, which gives your opponents a major advantage for those few seconds that you're away.

Keep a good stock of boost on hand, but don't go out of your way to collect them, either. You can collect a maximum of 100 boost units per match. Common boost orbs on the field restore 12 units each when collected, and respawn in about four seconds. Large orbs restore 100 boost units, but these only spawn on the four corners of the field and respawn in 10 seconds. As a result, you shouldn't go out to collect them unless the ebb and flow of the match takes you there.

Don't get greedy and take boost just because you can; remember that you share these orbs with your teammates. The only time you should consider collecting excess boost is when you notice opposing players going for one and want to deny them.

Boosting to supersonic speed is a great way to get across the field. Once you reach your top speed, however, you won't go any faster by burning more boost. You can maintain supersonic speed by holding accelerate and forward, so conserve your boost once you reach sonic levels.

When in doubt, defend

If it's a question of rotation or whether or not you should swing wide to grab boost before heading toward your goal, you should almost always err on the side of defending and worrying about boost later.

Your teammate will be much more understanding of you missing a save without boost (and at least having had the chance of stopping it) than if you abandon the goal to grab boost and miss the opportunity to defend.
